Who was the original host of "Inside Edition"?

Last updated: January 9, 2026

Tabloid news is supposed to be a little trashy. You tune in for celebrity divorces, bizarre crimes, and the occasional dramatic confrontation. "Inside Edition" has delivered all of that and more since 1989, including one of television's most legendary anchor meltdowns. Who was the original host of "Inside Edition"?

Correct Answer: David Frost

I need to know what executive looked at a show about celebrity scandals and crime stories and thought "let's hire the guy who made Nixon apologize for Watergate." David Frost drew 45 million viewers for the Nixon interviews back in 1977, and had been interviewing British prime ministers for decades. So naturally, someone decided he should host a show whose premiere episode covered a mother who murdered her own children.

Frost lasted about three weeks before ratings tanked and the network admitted he was just too posh to get down in the mud. Bill O'Reilly took over, and while he may have screamed at a few teleprompter operators along the way, at least he understood the assignment (and was willing to do it live).
