There are a lot of songs that I had to be told were covers. From Sinead O'Conner's rendition of "Nothing Compares 2 U" to Natalie Imbruglia's "Torn", sometimes updated versions simply outshine the originals.
Whitney Houston's '90s hit, "I Will Always Love You", was one such case for a lot of youngsters from the time. Turns out, the song was written by another legend in another time. Who was it?

In 1973 Dolly Parton wrote and recorded “I Will Always Love You” as a thank-you to Porter Wagoner, the variety show host who’d helped launch her career.Parton’s recording became a hit in 1974. Many years later, Kevin Costner secured her permission to use the song on 1992's The Bodyguard soundtrack.Houston's version topped the charts for a record-breaking 14 weeks.Source
