What was the first Studio Ghibli movie?
There were a few influential films that helped anime take off in the West. Ghost in the Shell and Akira were two major ones, but basically all of Studio Ghibli's films made a splash in the West to some degree. To this day, even the most casual non-anime watcher has at least heard of one of Ghibli's movies, if not seen one without even realizing it was from Japan.
Hayao Miyazaki has been the big brain and master director over at Ghibli ever since its founding. He’s written and directed almost all of Ghibli’s films despite having claimed he was going to retire about 50 times now. At this point, I don’t think he’ll stop until he’s dead, and even then he might still be able to get one last movie out somehow.
