Here are 5 things that happened on August 1st that matter to those of us who know what you are, but what am I?
I.
Birthdays of honor: Jason Momoa (1979), Jerry Garcia (1942), Coolio (1963), Dom DeLuis (1933), Herman Melville (1819), Francis Scott Key (1779), Chuck D (1960), Adam Duritz (1964), David Wain (1969).
II.
At 12:01 a.m., MTV began broadcasting in 1981. Do you remember the first video they played?

Six years later, MTV Europe debuted. This time the first video was Dire Straits’ “Money for Nothing”.
III.
In 1996, George R.R. Martin’s first book in his A Song of Fire and Ice series was published: Game of Thrones. You could argue we’ve been waiting for book six since that day.

IV.
In 1959 the Barbie doll was introduced to the world at the American International Toy Fair in New York. Perhaps it was the fact that the fair was both American AND International that set this brand up for lasting success.

V.
In the late ’90s we finally answered one of the great questions of science: Are children so bad at basketball that a dog could beat them?
That’s right: Air Bud was released today in 1997.
