Actor-comedian Steve Martin (1945) conquered stand-up in the 1970s, then went to the movies with "The Jerk," "Roxanne," and "Planes, Trains and Automobiles." He won Grammys for the comedy albums "Let's Get Small" and "A Wild and Crazy Guy," and he co-created and stars on "Only Murders in the Building."
Actor Carl Lumbly (1951) was a Minnesota reporter covering a theater workshop when the company cast him instead, and he's been working ever since, from "Cagney & Lacey" to "Alias." He voiced Martian Manhunter on "Justice League" and turned up last year in "Captain America: Brave New World" and "The Life of Chuck."
Actress Jackée Harry (1956) taught American history at a Brooklyn high school, then landed Sandra Clark on "227" and became the first Black actress to win the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. She played Lisa Landry on "Sister, Sister," has been Paulina Price on "Days of Our Lives" for five years now, and brought Sandra Clark back for "A Black Lady Sketch Show."
Basketball player Magic Johnson (1959) came out of Michigan State with an NCAA title and went first overall to the Lakers, then closed his rookie season by starting at center in Game 6 of the Finals and dropping 42 to clinch it. He's the only rookie ever to win Finals MVP, ran the Showtime Lakers to five titles and three league MVPs, and has since won ten more championships as an owner.
Actress Marcia Gay Harden (1959) broke through in "Miller's Crossing" and went right back to catering gigs because she was broke. She won an Oscar for playing painter Lee Krasner in "Pollock" and a Tony for "God of Carnage," and critics called her the best thing in this year's "The Dreadful."
Actress Halle Berry (1966) won Best Actress for "Monster's Ball," is still the only Black woman to do it, and played Storm across the "X-Men" films. She collected her "Catwoman" Razzie in person while holding that Oscar, directed herself in "Bruised," and joined "Crime 101" this year.
Actress Mila Kunis (1983) played Jackie Burkhart on "That '70s Show" and has been the voice of Meg Griffin on "Family Guy" ever since. She danced four hours a day to prep for "Black Swan," picked up a Golden Globe nomination, and turned up last year in "Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery."
