James Cameron has said the idea for his 1984 sci-fi masterpiece, The Terminator, came to him in a fever dream. According to a biography, his dream included a metallic torso holding kitchen knives, dragging itself away from an explosion.
Not a bad way to inspire a blockbuster franchise that’s still going strong today.
With modest expectations, when the film topped the box office for two weeks and pulled in over $78 million, it catapulted Cameron into one of Hollywood’s most sought-after directors and cemented Arnold Schwarzenegger as an actor capable of leading major films.
When Arnold expressed interest in the role of Kyle Reese and managed to land a meeting with Cameron, the director went in already wanting to avoid casting the bodybuilder. But by the time their meeting ended, he knew he had his Terminator.
