How many Oscars did "The French Connection" win?

"The French Connection" hit theaters in 1971 like a slap in the face to anyone expecting glossy Hollywood entertainment. William Friedkin's gritty crime thriller threw audiences into the grimy streets of New York with Gene Hackman's obsessive Detective "Popeye" Doyle pork pie hat and zero-tolerance approach to drug dealers. When Oscar season rolled around, how many Academy Awards did "The French Connection" manage to take home?

Correct Answer: 5
(Source)"The French Connection" was nominated for eight awards that night, and swept Best Picture, Best Actor for Gene Hackman, Best Director, Best Film Editing, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Popeye Doyle became an icon of 1970s cinema, and the movie features one of the most famous car chase sequences that had audiences white-knuckling their armrests. It beat out "A Clockwork Orange," "Fiddler on the Roof," "The Last Picture Show," and "Nicholas and Alexandra" for Best Picture, and proved that audiences were hungry for more realistic crime stories. They certainly got that a few months later in "Dirty Harry" and again in later '70s films like "Serpico," "Chinatown," and "Dog Day Afternoon."
