In what language was "Seasons in the Sun" originally sung?

"We had joy, we had fun" was the kind of lyric that made music critics physically recoil. Terry Jacks' "Seasons in the Sun" sold 14 million copies in 1974 and spent three weeks at number one, but it didn't start as soft-rock schmaltz. "Seasons in the Sun" was originally sung in what language?

Correct Answer: French
(Source)Admittedly, I have to wonder how much a song can be changed before it becomes something else entirely. Jacques Brel reportedly wrote "Le Moribond" in a whorehouse in Tangiers, and the original features a dying man forgiving his wife for sleeping with his friend. Poet Rod McKuen translated it from French in 1963. Terry Jacks brought it to The Beach Boys in 1970, but Mike Love (boo) thought it was too wimpy and passed on it. Jacks decided to record it himself after his close friend was diagnosed with leukemia. By the time it hit American radio, all that was left was the dying part. Jacks cut the adultery, and the new sappy lyrics helped it reach number one in over 15 countries from Austria to Zimbabwe.
