How many paintings did Vincent Van Gogh sell in his lifetime?
Vincent Van Gogh is the most punk rock person of all time. Sure, he was creating art nearly 100 years before punk was even a thing, but if you invite your friends to hang out, get in fights with them, cut off your ear and then deliver it to a woman at a brothel, you are punk rock.
He was also one hell of a painter. Prone to psychiatric episodes and generally a sensitive and melancholy person from his youth, Van Gogh didn't even take up painting until 1881, when he was nearly 30 years old. He would die from a self-inflicted gunshot wound just nine years later.
In that time he created artworks that would go on to become some of the most influential and sought-after in the history of Western art. But how much of that success came while he was still alive?

The answer is: 1. Of the over 2,000 pieces of art the Post-Impressionist master created, Van Gogh only ever sold one painting during his lifetime (that we know of) — Red Vineyard at Arles. He sold it for 400 Belgian francs to a fellow artist and collector.Today it lies in the Pushkin Museum in Russia, and I think a few more of his paintings have become popular and sold since then — including Orchard with Cypresses, which sold for $117 million in 2022.Source
