How many times was Alfred Hitchcock nominated for an Oscar?

Alfred Hitchcock redefined what cinema could be and became the "Master of Suspense" in the process. This absolute genius made generations fear shower curtains, revolutionized camera techniques, and became such a household name they put his silhouette on TV. For someone who transformed Hollywood forever, how many times did the Academy actually nominate Hitchcock for Best Director?

Correct Answer: 5
The Academy only nominated Alfred Hitchcock five measly times for Best Director, and horrifyingly never gave him the award. The man who gave us "Psycho," "Vertigo," "North by Northwest," "Rear Window," and countless other masterpieces basically got snubbed his entire career. When they finally handed him a Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award in 1967, he walked up to the podium, said "Thank you," paused for a moment (to build suspense obviously), and finished with "very much indeed" before walking off.
