How old was director Luc Besson when he started writing The Fifth Element?

If you're wondering what I look for in a sci-fi movie, it can often be summed up in one word: vision.
Not that it's the only thing I like about a good sci-fi flick, but if it's got it, I'm most likely in.
Dune has vision. Logan's Run has vision. And 1997's The Fifth Element definitely has vision.
This movie has zany characters, a compelling yet mysterious storyline, and visual effects that surprisingly hold up well in the 2020s. There's zero downtime in this movie, and for my money that's a good thing. This is easily one of the better overall sci-fi movies from the '90s.
Maybe it's because director Luc Besson hails from France. Earning over $236 million at the box office, The Fifth Element was the highest-grossing French film for over a decade.
Besson was 38 when the movie came out — but how old was he when he started writing it?

Correct Answer: 16
The answer is: 16. Luc Besson was just 16 years old when he started writing The Fifth Element, decades before he started filming the movie at the age of 38. He said he conceived the rich world and characters to escape his lonely childhood. He initially planned the story as a trilogy, but was able to share his vision with the world in just one film.
