In which "Star Trek" film do Captains Picard and Kirk meet?

Last updated: November 18, 2025

The "Star Trek" franchise spent decades building up two legendary captains. Both were captains of ships named Enterprise, both had passionate fan followings, but both seemed destined to remain separated by different eras of "Star Trek" history. Paramount decided they wanted to pull off something that seemed impossible at the time. Which "Star Trek" film features Captains Picard and Kirk meeting?

Correct Answer: Star Trek Generations

William Shatner's Captain James T. Kirk had conquered "The Original Series" and six movies, while Patrick Stewart's Captain Jean-Luc Picard commanded "The Next Generation" for seven seasons. "Star Trek: Generations" introduced viewers to the Nexus, an interdimensional energy ribbon where time gets really weird. And in the 24th century (or 1994 if you were in theaters), Captain Picard used it to let Kirk jump from the 23rd century and team up. Kirk had supposedly died 78 years earlier when he got sucked into the Nexus during a rescue mission, but inside this magical space ribbon, he was just hanging out at a recreation of his old house, chopping wood and living his best retired life. When Picard shows up needing help to stop a mad scientist from blowing up a star system, Kirk initially wasn't interested in leaving paradise. But eventually he realized that even eternal bliss gets boring without a little danger, so the two captains returned to reality to save the day. Kirk didn't survive the mission, making "Generations" both his final adventure and the official passing of the torch to Picard's generation.
