(Source)I'd guess most people treat "Mayberry R.F.D." more like seasons 9, 10, and 11 of "The Andy Griffith Show" than a separate series. The original ended its eight-season run with a backdoor-pilot episode titled "Mayberry R.F.D.," and the new show premiered that fall by marrying Andy off to Helen Crump and handing the lead to Ken Berry as widowed farmer Sam Jones. The spinoff kept the town, most of the neighbors, and the ratings before CBS canceled it in the 1971 rural purge.
