Regis Philbin's first network gig was as the sidekick for which late-night host?

Regis Philbin looked so at home on television that it's weird to remember he was nearly chased out of the business before he started. His first national show in 1964 got pulled after four months, but a few years later, he got a second chance as a late-night sidekick. Which late-night host gave Regis Philbin his first network gig?

Correct Answer: Joey Bishop
(Source)Every failed Johnny Carson challenger seems to have accidentally launched somebody else's career. Joey Bishop handpicked Philbin as announcer for his ABC late-night show in 1967, and Regis spent two and a half years learning live TV next to a Rat Pack veteran. He got so good at it that Bishop signed off on the 1968 stunt where Philbin pretended to storm off the stage, one of the rare times the show ever topped Carson.
