Charles Schulz based his superstar pilot pup on Spike, his families old mixed-breed dog. It really makes total sense... if you think about it backwards while standing on your head. But Schulz loved the name Spike so much he recycled it for Snoopy's oddball brother in 1975, turning him into everyone's second favorite dog.
