But of course Sophia Petrillo was anything but sweet, and there were plenty of hints that her family was connected in some way to the Sicilian mafia. Was she capable of something a bit more sinister, or was she just a confused senior citizen who made a mistake?

The answer is: Arson. Sophia was charged with burning down her retirement home, the infamous Shady Pines. Allegedly she’d been negligent while making s’mores with a hotplate. Facing prison at age 85, she tried to flee the U.S. but was stopped by airport security. Charges were dropped after the fire was traced to a faulty heater. Source
