What dog breed is Hooch from "Turner & Hooch"?

Tom Hanks has played plenty of everyman characters throughout his career, but Detective Scott Turner in 1989's "Turner & Hooch" might be his most uptight. This guy's idea of a wild Friday night involves color-coding his sock drawer, so when he inherits a massive, slobbering canine partner from a murder victim, his pristine world gets turned completely upside down. What dog breed is Hooch from "Turner & Hooch"?
▼
Correct Answer: Dogue de Bordeaux
(Source)"Turner & Hooch" paired America's sweetheart with a Dogue de Bordeaux who drooled his way into movie history. Also called a French mastiff, the breed was basically unknown to Americans when the film came out, with about 300 of them in the entire country. The filmmakers looked at dozens of different breeds while trying to find the right balance of size, energy, and slobber. When they settled on Beasley the dog, he only got a few months of doggy acting classes before costarring with one of Hollywood's biggest names. Hanks spent weeks bonding with the dogs before filming just so they'd actually look at him instead of their trainers, and he called it the most exhausting shoot of his career.
