What game was Super Mario Bros. 2 built from?

Perhaps even more so than in the movie industry, when a video game does well, you can rest assured that a sequel will follow.
And there have been some great sequels in video game history — I mean, the first Grand Theft Auto was fine, but the sequels…
Naturally, when Super Mario Bros. for the NES became insanely popular across the world, a sequel was sure to follow. And it did! But, Nintendo execs thought the advanced gameplay of Super Mario Bros. 2 would be too difficult for American gamers. So, they did the next best thing — rip off a different game, lightly skin it with Mario stuff, and call it a day (in fairness, they couldn’t really rip it off since they owned it, but whatever, it was lazy).
So all those years, you were actually playing this other game — any idea what it’s called?

Correct Answer: Doki Doki Panic
The answer is: Doki Doki Panic. Just watch a little bit of Doki Doki Panic, and you realize that they really didn’t change much of anything for the American version of Super Mario Bros. 2. I mean, like, almost nothing besides the characters. But I’m really glad they did this — it brought characters like Shy Guy and Birdo into the Mario universe, and the unique character dynamics they bestowed upon each character still persist in new Mario games (Peach was clearly the best option).Released in 1987 for a one-off event in Japan, Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic featured characters made for the event. It can be roughly translated as Dream Factory: Heart-Pounding Panic. Eventually this version of the game was released as Super Mario USA in Japan, and we got the real sequel in America as Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels.Source
