I hope there’s never a time in history that we forget about "ALF", the show nor the alien. It’s one of those shows that probably should have never been made, but boy am I glad it did. It really exemplifies the kind of stuff people were willing to experiment with in the ‘80s.
If only it had lasted longer — but besides ratings and whatnot, it was technically extremely difficult to produce. But I say that’s what you signed up for when you made a show based around a puppet that likes to eat cats.
One of the weirdest things about this show is how the Tanner family just kind of accepts him and then moves on. They don’t really ask about his life before crashing to Earth, they just care about keeping the neighbor from seeing him. Among the things from his previous life that often get brushed aside is his real name. ALF is actually just an acronym. So what’s his Melmacian name?

The answer is: Gordon Shumway. I wonder if ALF ever gets upset that his adopted family just straight-up ignores the fact that he already had a name and calls him by a made-up acronym instead. Then again, with a name like Gordon Shumway, maybe it’s an improvement. It’s probably a cool name on Melmac.Source
