Last updated: June 5, 2024

There are few artists who have left as strong a mark on society as Sir Elton John.

Oh, you want proof? Among his many accomplishments, Elton John has: nine number one songs in the UK and US; sold over 300 million records; released seven consecutive number one albums; and put out over 50 top 40 hits.

If that weren’t enough, he’s also an EGOT winner (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony). Oh right, and he’s the most successful solo artist in the history of the Billboard charts era.

Of course, his biggest success might have been guest starring on The Muppet Show.

Yet like so many entertainers whom we look up to, Elton John has been lying to us — that’s not even his real name! I’ve heard you’re not supposed to trust someone with two first names, and I guess this finally proves it.

The answer is: Reginald Kenneth Dwight. On March 25, 1947, Sir Elton John came into the world — but back then he was given the name Reginald Kenneth Dwight. As one might imagine, that wasn’t exactly the most showbizzy name in the world, so when ol’ Reggie started gaining steam in his music career, he gave it an update. He came up with the name in honor of two early bandmates, saxophonist Elton Dean and vocalist Long John Baldry. And I guess he wanted to stick with the first names for all names structure...He started using the name Elton John in 1967 and in 1972 legally changed his name to Elton Hercules John.Source
