What is the deepest known point in the ocean?

Last updated: April 8, 2024

If you were remember the way too short-lived ‘90s sci-fi show, seaQuest DSV, or if you ever watched 1989’s The Abyss, you know that the deep ocean holds secrets we dare not even imagine.

Also, have you ever seen an anglerfish? Those things are super weird.

There is nowhere more unexplored on planet Earth than the vast open ocean, especially the deeper you go. Standing on a boat looking down at the deep blue, something ancient is stirred. Maybe that’s why people get seasick — it’s the body’s way of telling you humans don’t belong there.

But if you did want to go to the deepest point in the ocean, just how deep would you be going?

The answer is: Mariana Trench. If you wanted to go as deep as possible in the ocean, first of all, you’re nuts. Second, you need to go to the Mariana Trench. The deepest point in this underwater void is aptly named Challenger Deep which goes nearly 36,000 feet down, or about 6.8 miles. Listen, there’s absolutely nothing good that deep. All we’d do by exploring there is wake up some ancient eldritch god.Source
