What is the largest mammal currently living on Earth?

Last updated: July 8, 2024

When you hover over an anthill, you feel like a giant. But then you go to the zoo and the animals hover over you.

Of course, if you were alive 165 million years ago, you’d have dinosaurs hovering WAY over you. Of course, there were all kinds of big creatures that roamed the Earth, both on land and at sea, way before we were driving around while texting in our cars at the top of the food chain.

Today's mammals have a decidedly different makeup than the thunder lizards and critters of ye olden days, so we’re limiting this to only creatures who are still out there today. Which one of them is the biggest?

The answer is: Blue Whale. Weighing up to 400,000 pounds and getting up to 98 feet long, it would take 33 elephants to make up one blue whale. It’s also the loudest animal on the planet, with its calls reaching 188 decibels — louder than a jet. Source
