What is the surface temperature of the sun?

Last updated: September 5, 2023

Things the sun is good at: burning me, helping plants grow, melting glaciers. Things the sun is less good at: letting humans anywhere near it.

I'm sure you already know that the sun is, generally speaking, unreasonably hot. But let's say, for the sake of science, somehow you were able to actually step foot on our favorite star.

Just how hot would the surface be?

The answer is: 10,000°. The temperature of the sun varies depending on where you are. The hottest is within the sun's core, which can reach up to 27 million degrees. But out on the surface, it's just a "cool" 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit — still hot enough to melt almost every element known to man and completely vaporize a human body.Source
