What kind of reptile mutates into Godzilla in the 1998 film?

Usually, Godzilla is defined as an ancient, apex-predator dinosaur thing, with some nuclear testing thrown in to (barely) tie it to reality. In 1998, TriStar became the first American studio to make a "Godzilla" movie on its own, so of course it needed to reinvent everything we know and love about Godzilla. What kind of reptile mutates into Godzilla in the 1998 film?
▼
Correct Answer: Iguana
(Source)If you want to know how well 1998's "Godzilla" movie was received, consider that TriStar simply let its rights to a sequel lapse, and Toho included the monster in 2004's "Godzilla: Final Wars," only to have the real Godzilla kill it in less than 30 seconds. In fact, Toho has made it clear to everyone that, however you feel about the 1998 movie, that mutated iguana is not deserving of the name Godzilla, and will forever be referred to as just "Zilla."
