What was Princess Peach originally called in the U.S.?

Mario has held more jobs than any character in gaming history. Plumber, doctor, go-kart racer, golfer, tennis player, and whatever sport involves throwing turnips at walking mushrooms. But his most important gig has always been saving the princess. What was Princess Peach originally called in the U.S.?

Correct Answer: Princess Toadstool
(Source)This is why Nintendo learned to do everything itself. When they outsourced the English manual for 1985's "Super Mario Bros." to an ad agency, someone there just made up names because "Peach" didn't fit the Mushroom Kingdom theme. Princess Toadstool stuck for over a decade, and Miyamoto didn't even know his character had a different name in America until Super Mario 64. The game's opening letter bridged the gap by having her sign it "Princess Toadstool" with "Peach" handwritten in pink above. Miyamoto's naming logic at least made sense. Princesses made him think of girls, girls made him think of pink, and pink made him think of peaches. Okay, maybe not perfect logic either.
