The Billboard Hot 100 was first published in 1958 with Ricky Nelson's "Poor Little Fool" at the top. But I'll bet you anything that Billboard did not anticipate the glittery pop music that was to dominate their charts when the 1980s came along.
As a barometer for tracking the hottest songs of the moment, the Hot 100 is the place to go, and in August of 1983, the song of the moment was extremely clear.
Do you remember what it was, or did you huff too much hairspray?

The answer is: "Every Breath You Take". Chances are if you tuned your boombox to the local pop station any time in August of 1983, you would have heard this song from Sting and Co. within a few minutes — if it wasn't playing already."Every Breath You Take" spent eight weeks at the top of the Hot 100 before finally being dethroned by the Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)".Source
