(Source)Conan Doyle pulled a fast one when he made up 221B Baker Street. Back in the 1880s, Baker street didn't even go that high, but he probably thought he was saving from random family from an influx of fan mail. In reality, his first story, "A Study in Scarlet," wasn't exactly flying off the shelves and would take a few more years before Holmes became a name people would actually go looking for. And (un)lucky for Conan Doyle, he lived just long enough to find out London had plans to extend Baker street, which meant that 221 would finally become a real address.
