It's hard to believe, but before there was Smart Hulk the original big green guy had a bit of a stuttered start on his way to pop-culture stardom.
The original series didn't last long, but after Stan Lee and Jack Kirby found out a college had named their mascot after him, they realized they had something special with Hulk.
And that's why today you get to enjoy a plethora of Hulk-themed movies, shows, comics, merch, toys, and so much more. But when did he first appear in one of Marvel's comic books?

The answer is: 1962. While many superheroes got their debuts in other comics or anthologies, the Hulk first appeared in the debut issue of his very own series, The Incredible Hulk.Issue #1 came out in May of 1962, and introduced Dr. Bruce Banner, who gets hit with a G-Bomb while saving a teenager from its test blast. We just barely see him transform into Hulk before the issue ends. Surprise! He's not green. He's actually a gray color that Stan Lee preferred, but printing limitations forced them to choose a new color — and green was easier.Source
