The Beatles had conquered the world in ways that would make actual emperors jealous. At the height of Beatlemania, John Lennon attempted to put the band's unprecedented fame into perspective. Which historical figure did John Lennon compare The Beatles to?
▼
Correct Answer: Jesus
(Source)Not only did John Lennon say that the Beatles were "more popular than Jesus," but he also decided to throw in that he thought Christianity was dying out. When American audiences got wind of his comments, you could almost literally hear millions of vinyl records getting scratched. Radio stations banned Beatles music, fans organized massive record-burning rallies, and the whole mess forced The Beatles to hold a press conference to try and save face. Lennon explained he wasn't comparing their importance to Jesus, just their current popularity with young people. The controversy was so intense it was one of the main factors leading to the band's decision to just stop touring.
