Last updated: December 19, 2025

Meryl Streep is the kind of actress who makes other actors nervous just by existing. She disappears into every role, nails every accent, and has won three Oscars out of a staggering 21 nominations. Which film earned Meryl Streep her first Oscar?

Correct Answer: Kramer vs. Kramer

Streep has received at least one Oscar nomination in five of the last six decades (the 2020s are only halfway done, so she can still make it six for six). Her first nomination came in 1978 for "The Deer Hunter," but she didn't win. The following year, she showed up to play Joanna Kramer in "Kramer vs. Kramer" and hated how the character was written in the original script. She rewrote her own dialogue to make her more sympathetic, and the gamble paid off. After just 12 days of shooting, she walked away with Best Supporting Actress.

The divorce drama became the highest-grossing film of 1979 and swept the Oscars, taking home Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Dustin Hoffman, Best Screenplay (Adapted), and Best Supporting Actress for Streep. Considering she rewrote some of her best scenes, I hope she got at least partial custody of the Screenplay Oscar.
