Which movie was the first from a female director to break $100 million?

I wonder what $100 million looks like? If you were to break it out into individual $1 bills, would you be able to Scrooge McDuck it and go for a cash swim?

Anytime I hear about that kind of money, I want to ask them to give me like $10,000 of it. They won’t even notice.

But when this movie came out, people DEFINITELY noticed. And in an industry that had historically been dominated by dudes, it showed that female directors were much more than a novelty.

We’ll give you one little clue — this one was (and still is) a hit with the family crowd. Which movie was the first from a female director to gross over $100 million at the box office?

The answer is: Big. Big, the 1988 comedy-drama starring Tom Hanks, was directed by Penny Marshall.Known for her lead role on the classic sitcom Laverne & Shirley, Penny Marshall has an impressive track record. Her sophomore release, Big, was the first motion picture release to hit $100 million in gross revenue with a female director. She then went on to direct 1990's Awakening, which was nominated for an Academy Award, and 1992's A League of Their Own, which grossed over $100 million as well. There's no crying when raking in the $$ and breaking barriers.
