Which network aired "The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers"?

Joan Rivers had spent decades clawing her way to the top of the comedy world, and by 1986 she was ready for the ultimate prize. A television network came calling with an offer to make her the first woman to host a late-night network talk show, giving her the chance to step out from behind anyone's shadow and claim her own spotlight. Which network aired "The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers"?

Correct Answer: Fox
(Source)Rivers had been Johnny Carson's permanent guest host on "The Tonight Show" since 1983, but NBC wasn't exactly rolling out the red carpet for her future. When contract negotiations stalled and the network refused to guarantee her anything beyond another year, Rivers started listening when other people came knocking. Fox was launching in October 1986 and desperately needed a big name to anchor their late-night programming, so they offered Rivers more money than NBC was paying and her own show to boot. Rivers accepted the Fox deal and became the host of "The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers," which premiered as the very first program ever broadcast on the Fox Broadcasting Company on October 9, 1986. The problem was that Carson found out about her decision from watching a press conference on television instead of hearing it from Rivers directly, and he felt completely betrayed. When Rivers tried calling him afterward, Carson refused to take the call and never spoke to her again for the rest of his life. The show itself became a nightmare almost immediately, with Fox executives constantly battling Rivers and her husband Edgar Rosenberg, who was the executive producer. When the network demanded she fire him in May 1987, Rivers refused and got canned after just seven months. Her final broadcast was pure chaos and Rivers didn't appear on "The Tonight Show" again until February 17, 2014, when Jimmy Fallon had her on as a guest during his very first episode as the new host.
