Who did Nirvana knock out of the top spot when they hit no. 1?

I’m not sure how exactly to impart upon kids today just how shocking it was when Nirvana — the grungy, punky, antithesis of pop, loud band from the Pacific NorthWest — reached no. 1 on the Billboard charts.
Given the number of Nirvana shirts I see teenagers wearing these days, it seems like to a young person Nirvana was probably always one of the biggest rock bands around, and that their music was always destined to reach a broad audience. Which, of course, anyone alive and lucid in the ‘90s would say — the hell?
There was no way to see Nirvana’s Nevermind coming for the average person, which made its arrival that much more stunning.

Correct Answer: Michael Jackson
The answer is: Michael Jackson. Here’s a way to explain to kids just how shocking Nirvana’s rise was: Some of the other artists that were below them in the top 10 included Garth Brooks, M.C. Hammer, Guns N’ Roses, and Michael Bolton. But the King of Pop and his album Dangerous were unceremoniously kicked out of the top spot by this unshaven band that wore jeans with holes in them. It was a clear turning point in popular music.Source
