Christian Bale was 17 when he took the lead in "Newsies," a retelling of the 1899 New York newsboys' strike, and he reportedly tried to skip the musical numbers entirely. It was a fair ask when you consider the movie flopped both at the box office and in the newspapers. Not even Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken was safe, taking home a Razzie for his original song. Bale went on to headline "American Psycho" and put on the Batsuit for Christopher Nolan, so whatever he lost in teenage dignity, he earned back with interest.
