Who mentors the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?

Someone had to teach four teenage turtles how to roundhouse kick bad guys between pizza breaks. Living in the New York sewers and dealing with teenage attitudes wasn't exactly a normal teaching gig, but these weren't exactly normal students. Their sensei needed serious patience, ninja skills, and probably a strong stomach for both sewer life and pizza. Who ended up shaping these reptiles into heroes?

Correct Answer: Master Splinter
Master Splinter ended up with the honor of teaching ninjutsu to four hyperactive turtle teenagers in a sewer. The comics originally had him as Hamato Yoshi's pet rat who picked up ninja moves by watching his owner train, but the 1987 TV show flipped the script and made him Hamato Yoshi himself, transformed into a rat by mutagen. Maybe the writers figured a former human ninja master made more sense than a rat who learned karate through intense people-watching.
