Who was the first host of "The Hollywood Squares"?

What do you get when you trap nine celebrities in giant boxes and force contestants to figure out if Phyllis Diller actually knows anything about home economics? That's right, you get "The Hollywood Squares," which was more comedy show than game show most of the time. Who was the first host to help guide contestants to their celebrity-fueled tic-tac-toe win?

Correct Answer: Peter Marshall
(Source)Stars, they're just like us! That extends to their pettiness, too. See, Peter Marshall was busy with a comedy routine in New York when he got a call to audition for the hosting gig on "The Hollywood Squares." He really had no interest in the show, but when he heard the job might go to Dan Rowan, he accepted. These two had beef going back to when Rowan treated Marshall's comedy partner like garbage during his terminal illness, so Marshall figured he'd rather host a game show he didn't want than let that happen. The producers loved Marshall's casual vibe, and he figured he could suffer through 13 weeks of filming before heading back to Broadway. But audiences couldn't get enough of grown adults playing tic-tac-toe while Paul Lynde cracked jokes about his sex life, and 13 weeks turned into 15 years.
