The Academy Awards spent decades celebrating classical composers and Broadway veterans, while hip-hop shaped global culture from the outside looking in. But in 2003, the Oscars' rigid walls finally cracked. The question wasn't if a rapper would claim that golden statue, but who would break through first?

The answer is: Eminem
Detroit, 2002. Between takes on the "8 Mile" set, Eminem was crafting something extraordinary. "Lose Yourself" married raw determination with technical brilliance - internal rhyme schemes and narrative tension building toward an explosive chorus that would echo through stadiums for decades.
The track stood apart from typical movie songs. No sweeping orchestras. No soaring love themes. Just raw energy, precise wordplay, and a pulse that resonated far beyond any single genre or audience. The song rocketed to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 - Eminem's first time topping the charts.
When the 2003 Oscar nominations came out, music critics did a double-take. A rap song competing against traditional ballads and showtunes? It was uncharted territory for the Academy.
Then came the win – and the famous no-show. Eminem was home sleeping, later admitting he didn't think he had a chance. The first rapper to win an Oscar missed his moment because he couldn't imagine the Academy was ready for such a seismic shift.
The victory changed film music forever. Three 6 Mafia would claim their own Oscar three years later for "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp." Common and John Legend would triumph with "Glory." But "Lose Yourself" holds its place in history as the first.
In 2020, seventeen years after his win, Eminem finally performed "Lose Yourself" at the Oscars. Better late than never.
