What book is Apocalypse Now based on?
When you’ve already made a movie people think is one of the greatest of all time, you’d think you’d call it a day. At least I would. But not if you’re Francis Ford Coppola, who followed up 1972’s The Godfather with another film widely regarded to be one of the best ever in 1979’s Apocalypse Now.
But let’s also give the cast its due, which is just a bonkers ensemble, including Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, Martin Sheen, and Dennis Hopper.
The film tapped into cultural angst surrounding the Vietnam War, but is just really good. And while it deserves to stand on its own, it was clearly largely inspired by a well-known book. The answer is: Heart of Darkness. Heart of Darkness is a novella written by Joseph Conrad and published in 1899. It’s not taking anything away from the movie to note that it takes much from the book, including the concept of floating down the river, the character named Kurtz who has seemingly gone mad, and a critique on cultural attitudes.
