What temperature is the boiling point of water?

Last updated: September 20, 2023

You've certainly heard the phrase about how watching a pot of water means it will never boil. Of course, that's a bald-faced lie.

As long as you hit the right temperature, that water is going to boil no matter what the hell you're doing. You could be staring at it or you could be in another room, because science honestly doesn't care about you. Water gonna boil.

But while you've probably heard or read this somewhere before, do you remember at what actual temperature water begins to boil?

Correct Answer: 212°

The answer is: 212°F. 212 degrees Fahrenheit or 100 degrees Celcius is the normal boiling point for water — at sea level. But the higher in elevation you are, the lower the boiling point, thanks to less air pressure. On Mount Everest, water can boil at just 160°F — which I'm sure is the first thing most people test once they get to the summit.Source
