What town does SpongeBob SquarePants live in?

Cartoon characters don’t just exist in a vacuum. Some are boring and take place in real locations, but the cool ones make up their own worlds to inhabit. 

SpongeBob SquarePants was already pushing the boundaries for creativity when it came out in 1999. I mean, a show about a sea sponge who lives in a pineapple and wants to be a fry cook? I hate to say it, but I’d turn down that pitch if I was in charge. 

While I’m in this moment of clarity, I also have to apologize to all the parents (and grandparents) out there who are subjected to that terrible theme song day after day. The song makes sure we’ll never forget the main character’s name, but never mentions the actual town he lives in.

SpongeBob isn’t just about the individual, but the entire community he annoys with his grating giggling and cartoon antics. If you were to try and visit this underwater dystopia, where would you be going?
