It’s said that Pac-Man was developed for a non-violent crowd, to which I say: Non-violent? How is literally eating ghosts not a form of violence? Ghosts have no rights, man.
Still, that was the goal, and the developers especially wanted to appeal to women. Thus the cutesy round dude, whose shape was inspired both by pizza but also by general eating-related stuff. This game really is all about chomping (again, seems like a form of violence).
But he wasn’t even known by that iconic name when the game first came out in Japan. What was Pac-Man originally called?

Correct Answer: PuckMan
The answer is: PuckMan. When the game featuring our favorite hungry circle came to the U.S., it was known as PuckMan, because, well, the character was shaped like a puck. But U.S. arcades were nervous the youths would turn the P into an F, and then all of society would crumble. The phrase “paku paku” is used in Japanese to refer to munching on food, and Pac-Man kind of sounded like paku, plus the whole eating concept, so there ya go. Source
