The answer is: Brown. One of the most successful bands of all time, Van Halen was known for their larger-than-life, energetic live shows. In order to ensure the safety of not only the band, but the audience as well, Van Halen management used their contract-rider to verify a venue's integrity. Specifically, a bowl of M&M candies were to be placed in the dressing room, without any brown candies present. If, upon arrival at a venue, the band saw the candies sans brown, they were satisfied that the more technical aspects of their contract had been fulfilled. If they found brown candies, or no M&M's at all, the management team would then know to have their crew inspect the venue's work, have it redone, or cancel the show altogether. Source
