Back in the early '70s, it was apparently not that hard to get the authorities to release a body to you — all it took for Phil Kaufman and Michael Martin was to show up in a hearse and act like they knew what they were doing.According to the pair, Parsons had told them he wanted to be buried in Joshua Tree, and they were simply honoring his wishes. The remains were later recovered and returned to the family, with the duo having to pay for all associated costs, but never serving any kind of jail time.Source
