If you're talking Woodstock, it better be about two things: Snoopy's bird friend, or the original music festival from 1969 that has become cultural mythology.
In this case, we're talking about the latter. Pretty much every big name musician from the time ultimately showed up at Woodstock '69 (yep, even Sha Na Na), but somebody had to kick things off — and they did it the right way, damn it.

The answer is: Richie Havens. Known for his live performances, Brooklyn native Richie Havens kicked off the original Woodstock with a 50-minute set. Paul Williams accompanied on guitar and vocals, and Daniel Ben Zebulon played the congas. Some highlights were a cover of the Youngbloods’ “Get Together,” a cover of the Beatles’ “Strawberry Fields Forever,” and “Freedom” — a song inspired by the festival itself. Much of their set was improvised. It went longer than planned because other acts were delayed in traffic.Source
