Who was the first woman to be appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court?

I don’t get what all the hubbub is about the Supreme Court. In my opinion, the whole process of appointing justices is way too complicated and annoying. I think it should be based on votes from regular people where everyone gets to write in their top five. 

Here are my top five votes the next time a seat opens up:

1. ALF — He’d bring a sense of levity to the bench.
2. Magnum P.I. — Tough but fair.
3. Risk Astley — We already know all the things he won’t do, which should all be required for Supreme Court justices.
4. Whitney Houston — Believes children are the future.
5. Voltron — Is an awesome robot.

I understand there are various logistical problems with appointing any of the names on this list (Voltron, for example, would technically require five open seats), but that’s the beauty of democracy. 

Another thing you may notice this list has in common is that they were all popular in the ‘80s — and hey, it was 1981 when the first woman was appointed to the United States Supreme Court. Who was it?
