Let's just get this out of the way upfront since we know it's such a divisive issue — we're talking about the shortest president in terms of height, NOT in terms of tenure. There, we said it.
Since George Washington first took up the office in 1789, the United States has seen a total of 45 presidents, each with their own unique style, haircuts, idiosyncrasies, and of course, height. Call me crazy, but I would find it hard to negotiate or impose political leverage upon others if you're looking up at them.
Napoleon sort of pulled it off, but in fairness he was actually a couple of inches taller than the shortest president from the USA. Who holds this distinctive record in American history?

Correct Answer: James Madison
The answer is: James Madison. At just 5 feet 4 inches, James Madison became the shortest so far as the fourth President of the United States — and never relinquished the title.Unsurprisingly, Abe Lincoln holds the record for the tallest president at 6 feet 4 inches.Source
