July 3 in Nerd History
Here are 5 things that happened on July 3 for those of us who read the book adaptation of a movie before the actual movie came out.
I.
Birthdays of honor: Tom Cruise (1962), Olivia Munn (1980), Patrick Wilson (1973), Franz Kafka (1883), Benedict Wong (1971), Kurtwood Smith (1943), Montel Williams (1956), David Barry (1947).
II.
In 1985 we went back to the past. But there was a problem, we had to find a way back to, you know, what wasn’t the past anymore. Back to the Future hit theaters on this day and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. Great Scott indeed.

But wait — there’s more! In 1991, one of the best movies ever made, period, was released: that’s right, Terminator 2: Judgement Day.
And teenage me certainly wouldn’t forget to remind you that on July 3, 1996, the most patriotic movie of all time came out: Independence Day.

Lastly, for the LaBeouf-heads in the house, we should also mention that Michael Bay’s reboot of Transformers kicked things off for what would become approximately 12 million movies starting on this day in 2007.
III.
In 1971, Jim Morrison was found dead in a bathtub at the age of 27. An autopsy was never performed.
Sadly, that wasn’t the only tragic death in music history for July 3 — in 1969 Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones was found in his swimming pool at his home in England. Jones was also 27.
IV.
In 1985 Tinkerbell took her first nightly flight at Walt Disney World and hasn’t stopped since (kind of a lie, sometimes there are special shows where she doesn’t take part, but whatever). Seems like kind of brutal working conditions for a fairy, to be honest.
V.
On this day in 1983, “Every Breath You Take” by The Police was the top jam in the nation. And yes, it’s actually pretty creepy when you think about it.
