Here are 5 things that happened on July 17 at the intersection of nerd and pop culture.
I.
Birthdays of honor: David Hasselhoff (1952), Donald Sutherland (1935), James Cagney (1899), Phyllis Diller (1917), Vince Guaraldi (1928).
II.
We finally answered the question, “How much is too much Michael Keaton?” when Multiplicity came out in 1996.
Just kidding, there’s no such thing as too much Michael Keaton.
III.
On this day in 1954, construction commenced in Anaheim, California, on Disneyland.
Exactly one year later, the grand opening of Disneyland was televised live on TV, and it was a complete mess. Unusual heat caused shoes to dip into hot pavement, the water fountains didn’t work, and special guests got stuck in traffic only to eventually show up drunk.
They had a doover the next day when the park opened to the public, which went much better and is often referred to as the real opening day by Disney itself.
IV.
I’m not sure how to impart upon you just how absolutely earth-shattering it was when Hulk Hogan went from the WWF to the WCW.
And in his in-ring premiere on July 17, 1994, he did the unthinkable: beat Ric Flair for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship.

This event also featured a couple of up-and-comers: Cactus Jack (aka Mick Foley) and Steve Austin (aka … well, I mean, that one’s obvious).
V.
On this day in 1991, you were probably in the theater watching Terminator 2: Judgment Day for the third or fourth time, which was crushing the box office.
