What was the name of the team that summoned Captain Planet?

The answer is: The Planeteers

The Planeteers were five teenagers from different continents, chosen by Gaia, the spirit of Earth, to protect our planet with magical rings. Each ring controlled an element: Kwame from Africa had Earth, Wheeler from North America commanded Fire, Linka from the Soviet Union wielded Wind, Gi from Asia controlled Water, and Ma-Ti from South America possessed Heart.

These teens faced off against a lineup of absolutely ridiculous villains with names that would make even the worst dad joke look sophisticated. I guess when you're facing off against the forces of Hoggish Greedly, Verminous Skumm, and Duke Nukem, there's not really a question of which side is the bad guys. Looten Plunder was a corrupt businessman with a name about as subtle as a brick through a window.

When environmental emergencies and silly villains were too big a threat for their individual powers, the Planeteers raise their rings skyward and shouted their elements in sequence. The ritual always ended with Ma-Ti yelling "Heart!" which honestly got him teased by fans for years. Their powers combined would summon Captain Planet, who'd fly in with his signature catchphrase "By your powers combined, I am Captain Planet!"
