Happy National VCR Day! Let us celebrate the device that brought home entertainment into an entirely new age and allowed us to accidentally record over cherished childhood memories with the Seinfeld finale.
This is The Reset Button from Classic Nerd, resetting your day.
June 7 in Nerd History
Here are 5 things that happened on June 7 that matter to those of us who rewinded unkindly.
I.
Birthdays of honor: Prince (1958), Liam Neeson (1952), Dean Martin (1917), Tom Jones (1940), Michael Cera (1988), Jessica Tandy (1909), Mick Foley (1965), Dave Filoni (1974).
II.
In 1985 a little movie called The Goonies was widely released in theaters. Aside from featuring multiple future stars, it invented the ’80s trope of kids riding around on bikes solving mysteries. Despite some rumored efforts in the mid-aughts, a sequel thankfully has never come to fruition — and hopefully, it stays that way.

Let’s also not forget about Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, released in 1991, nor perhaps John Travolta’s best acting work in Face/Off from 1997.
III.
In 1993, on his 35th birthday, Prince changed his name to a symbol. In theory, it was to protest the rigidity of record contracts and their control over artists — but I think he just wanted to try it out.

IV.
The owner of a record store in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., was arrested for selling 2 Live Crew’s As Nasty As They Wanna Be after it was declared legally obscene, kicking off a series of hearings and appeals on free speech and music. I’m glad we’re over that now!
V.
Sony introduced the Betamax to the public on this day in 1975. And on National VCR Day — bold.
